As an illustrator most of my time is spent drawing relatively cute and pretty pictures aimed to appease conservative publishers and appeal to a young market. Thus, my private sketchbook is a haven to unfetter my brain on paper... (If you are looking for my usual work in children's literature, check out my regular blog at http://benredlich.blogspot.com/)

BIA Life Drawing Group 1/10/12
Here's Emma from last week again. Medium of choice this night was watercolour pencil, a little bit of acrylic ink, and gouache highlights.
The top 10 minute sketch on the next one looks sloppy in so many ways. I should have cropped this page...

Train People
I hate public transport, purely because Brisbane's is a shamble, but my transport of choice, after my car, is the train. I get motion sick trying to read or draw on buses, but trains aren't so bad. You get some interesting sorts on the train too...

BIA Life Drawing Group 17/9/12
I though I'd try out some life drawing at the Brisbane Institute of Art at Windsor, only about 10 minutes from where I live (with miles of parking!!). This model's name was Jenny. So many beautifully pronounced curves to draw, perfect!

Dr Sketchy's Brisbane - August 2012
Modelling for the August edition were the pretty girls from Miss BB. Le Buff's School Of Performance.
That's 'Miss Blue Velvet' in the hat, who also posed in the March edition (that's a fake beard btw, there was a sideshow theme, being Ekka time and all). I stuffed up her profile on the right page, damn.
I'm not sure who else is who, I didn't catch all the names. I'll add them in if I find out...

Bikeway Sketches
After a week of drizzle it was nice to get out and do a bit of sketching, so I took my bike for a ride along Kedron Brook. Such a lovely afternoon too.
I love the following house at Everton Park, it's an unusual sight in Brisbane. It's located on a huge chunk of land with a dozen or so head of cattle. It feels like time has stood still in this tiny part of the city.

Dr Sketchy's Brisbane - July 2012
I hadn't been to Sketchy's in a couple months, been flat out with shifting house and getting artwork finished for another book.
I took special care trying to incorporate a face on the 10 minute sketch above, but I ended up making her look like Dustin Hoffman, so I promptly whited it out.
Unfortunately I had cut this 15 minute pose short and run to catch my bus home.

Dr Sketchy's Brisbane - April 2012
Dr Sketchy favourite La Viola Vixen. She was the model last December, and July before that.
Miss Burlesque 2012, Alyssa Kitt, did this quick pose...
No faces, again. I was jokingly likened to a serial killer by a fellow Sketchy sketcher, and asked if I keep the drawings of lady's heads in my freezer :-D
I was loving the choice of music this night — a mix of vintage french jazz like Django Reinhardt and Gus Visuer, Edith Piaf, and a lot of film noir-style jazz. I thought someone had raided my iTunes! I like working to this style of music, so I think it helped my drawing!
